Nothing strikes fear into a parent more then the day their child brings home a recorder to practice! You may be surprised to hear that I also dread the first days of a recorder unit (in all seriousness, I wear earplugs!), however, it is always amazing how quickly the students learn to turn their squeaks and squawks into controlled and beautiful tones.
Recorders are an instrument that introduce students to the amazing world of wind instruments. The ability to create music from air is amazing. The combination of technique (fingerings+breath control) and musicality ( tone, dynamics, tuning and phrasing) exposes the students to a higher level of musical learning. So although recorders may seem like a weapon of mass destruction, it is actually one of the best instruments to learn more advanced musical skills.

Joy Tunes
A fun and helpful website to help kids learn the recorder is JoyTunes. We use the free program in class and students can also use it at home. You will need a computer with a microphone. If you prefer you use your iPad, you can buy the app for $1.99.
On your computer, simply go to http://www.joytunes.com/master/ and click on "recorder" (recorder master).
PS. If you want me to see your progress, click on "Connect to Teacher" in the top menu, and type in my name (Katherine Key), then click on "Katherine Key, Canada". You'll have to enter your name and teacher so I know whose progress I'm viewing.
