WHAT THE HECK ARE BARRED INSTRUMENTS?
Many people stare in confusion when we talk about barred instruments. They are simply instruments with wooden or metal bars that are tapped with a mallet to create music.
Most of you are familiar with a xylophone....this is the most common barred instrument.
At Watson Road, we have a full class set of barred instruments for the students to play on. Our collection consists mostly of xylophones (wood bars), but also includes metallophones (metal bars) and glockenspiels (small metal bars). Each category of instruments comes in 3 sizes....Bass (low), Alto (medium) and Soprano (high).
The barred instruments are excellent for young musicians, as they provide a platform where the students can both hear and see the melodic lines and chord patterns that they are playing.
At Watson Road, students explore the wonders of the barred instruments extensively.

ARE BARRED INSTRUMENTS THE ONLY ORFF INSTRUMENTS??
The answer to that, is a vehement NO! The Orff method of teaching music uses music, movement, dance and speech. The Orff philosophy focuses on elements of rhythm, melody, and improvisation to create a "whole" music experience for children. At Watson Road, much of the music program is strongly Orff-inspired, although Mrs. Key does not strictly follow any one specific music methodology.
